Grade 2
Second graders are ready to grow, applying what they’ve already learned toward more challenging material and experiences. They bring with them a toolbox of basic reading and mathematical skills to use as they practice and extend their literacy and numeracy ability. They are ready to broaden their knowledge of the world around them.
ISD’s second grade classrooms are language-rich places where students and teachers work together in communities of learning. Reading, writing, speaking and listening are taught across all content areas, providing our diverse student population with multiple opportunities for sharing and growing.
Students are encouraged to cooperate, create, connect, reflect and make meaning in a trusting environment. Classrooms of learners work together and in small groups to develop social skills and cooperative work habits. Lessons are tailored to embrace different learning styles and aptitudes.
Second graders begin their day at 8:30 AM and often start with a classroom morning meeting that sets the tone for respectful learning. Included in each day is time for literacy and mathematics activities, social studies or scientific exploration, snack, recess and lunch.
Throughout the week, second graders visit the library to check out books, participate in music and art classes, explore movement and physical education through games, and learn digital literacy and research skills. Second graders receive 45 minutes of daily, leveled French instruction.
Non-proficient English language learners in the second grade receive support during language arts instruction. Identified second graders who will benefit from small-group remedial work in literacy development receive support during the French instructional block and do not participate in the French program at ISD.
