Academic programmes at ISD
ISD'S Approach - IB Primary Years Programme We promote the development of the whole child through the IB Learner Profile. Our Programme of Inquiry creates authentic opportunities for academic growth utilizing constructivist approaches to learning.
IB Primary Years Program (PYP) for children aged 3 - 12 nurtures and develops young students as caring, active participants in a lifelong journey of learning.
Through its inquiry-led, trans-disciplinary framework, the PYP challenges students to think for themselves and take responsibility for their learning as they explore local and global issues and opportunities in real-life contexts.
ISD'S Approach - IB Middle Years ProgrammeInternational School of Dakar is proud to offer the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) as an IB World School. IB World Schools share a common philosophy- a commitment to high-quality, challenging, international education- that we believe is important for our students. The MYP is a vital part of the learning continuum between PYP and DP where students learn through inquiry how to be internationally-minded active learners.
Students from grades 6-10 make practical connections between the classroom and the world around them.
ISD'S Approach - IB Diploma ProgrammeAt ISD we offer a comprehensive range of choices across the six subject group areas as well as the potential for Diploma courses offered online by Pamoja Education.
We have an experienced and Diploma trained faculty who are continually developing their professional practice and expertise through a three-year cycle of official IBO training workshops.
A number of our faculty are also trained as IB Diploma examiners which allows them to deepen their understanding of global standards and expectations in the numerous externally assessed components of the IB Diploma programme. This knowledge and understanding immediately benefits the learning of our community here at ISD.
Our continuing focus on the Diploma CORE which includes Theory of Knowledge, Creativity Activity Service (CAS) and Extended Essay now has designated class time throughout the year and two specialist coordinators to facilitate the management of this central part of the IB Diploma program.
The IB Diploma Programme is designed as a challenging and balanced program of education for students in Grade 11 and 12, with final examinations that prepare students for success at university and life beyond.
The program, which is taught over two years, has gained recognition and respect from the world’s leading universities. It is offered by some 2,200 IB World Schools in around 130 different countries.
Since the late 1960s, the programme has:
- Provided a package of education that balances subject breadth and depth, and considers the nature of knowledge across disciplines through the unique theory of knowledge course.
- Encouraged international-mindedness in IB students, starting with a foundation in their own language and culture.
- Developed a positive attitude to learning that prepares students for university education.
- Gained a reputation for its rigorous external assessment with published global standards, making this a qualification welcomed by universities worldwide.
- Emphasized the development of the whole student - physically, intellectually, emotionally and ethically.
