Welcome to ISD Middle School!
Grades 6 to 8
Welcome to the Middle School division of the International School of Dakar. Our middle school program is designed to enrich and support students as they make the transition from elementary school to high school. International School of Dakar was recently authorized to offer the IB Middle Years Program (MYP) and shares the IB philosophy- a commitment to high-quality, challenging, international education- that we believe is important for our students. The middle school is a vibrant community where learning is fun.
Between the ages of 10 and 14, children experience tremendous physical, social and cognitive growth. While we are first and foremost an academic institution, we take great care to help students reach their full potential as their minds, bodies and social circles expand. Our classes and programs are designed in such a way as to allow students to work cooperatively, to problem-solve, to apply new learning and to participate in a wide range of academic, artistic and athletic endeavors. Middle School at ISD consists of Grades 6-8, with three sections at each grade level and approximately 20 students in core classes.
Middle school students have eight different classes, each class meeting for 75 minutes every other day. They have four classes one day and the other four classes the next day. Students have a different teacher for each class.
Each student is also placed in an advisory group, which is a group that encourages student growth and reflection. Advisory groups consist of a Middle School faculty member and a small group of grade-level peers. The advisor acts as a role model, mentor, and advocate as he or she leads the small group of students through a range of academic, social-emotional learning, and global awareness activities during the daily 30 minute advisory period. Each middle school student is also a part of a House Group where different advisory groups work together in team building and spirited competition.
Every part of learning in middle school is centered around our CORE values of creativity, open-mindedness, responsibility, and excellence. Our community of students exhibits these values every day both in and out of the classroom.
In addition to their academic lives, ISD middle school students participate in after-school activities, theater, athletics and service opportunities. The Middle School Student Council plans multiple social activities including dances and movie nights, raises money for charity, and works to improve the overall experience for the middle school students.
Each year, the students and teachers take learning beyond the school walls. In the fall, the entire middle school goes off-campus for a one day retreat to focus on the ISD core values and to spend time bonding. Later in the school year, the Middle School students and their teachers experience a grade-level Week Without Walls trip to a different region of Senegal. Students also have the opportunity to travel internationally for athletic, arts, and international trips.
The visual and performing arts department hosts JagArts three times a year which gives the artistic students an opportunity to demonstrate their skills to the rest of the ISD learning community.
The middle school is a busy and vibrant place. Please feel free to stop by for a visit, preview the grade level program guides on this website, or contact us for more information on our school.
